In the Flow... (when Dance is a metaphor of Life)

About letting go of the need for control to welcome much more than we can imagine and desire.

I love dancing.

When I dance, I experience the beauty of surrendering to a flow that carries me beyond any intention of moving and makes me feel and perceive, in every fiber of my being, that I am part of a current of infinite compassion-with-passion. Everything becomes effortless, every gesture arises from feeling rather than doing, and every struggle of life disappears, leaving only the sense of belonging to a whole that transcends all individual boundaries.

And beyond my current identity, in that moment, I feel that I exist as a manifestation of Existence itself, carried beyond the gravity of the weight that each body normally embodies, incorporating the lightness that emerges when we let Nature take the helm and lead the way.

Yes, dear ones, the body is a natural miracle, and knowing it means understanding those laws that guide us precisely because they constitute us, weaving the fabric of our being human—where 'humanity' takes on, for me, a profound spiritual meaning...

Lately, I have found myself reflecting on the power of surrender that arises from letting go of control at all costs. Throughout my life, there have been times when I felt it was essential to plan everything, as if the course of events depended on my will. At certain moments and in certain cases, being able to do this—planning things as if everything depended on it—helps. Willpower is a precious tool, and, in fact, much of what we do is accomplished precisely when we exercise the power of our will. Most of the time, it is thanks to willpower that we navigate life, choosing what to do and how to do it.

But our will is subject to limitations — our perceptual limitations, which define the boundaries of what we aim to achieve and the horizons we set for ourselves. Indeed, we can only ‘will-and-want’ what falls within our realm of imagination, and imagination is shaped by what we believe is good for us, based on past experiences. Even if we manage to imagine beyond, we would still imagine something predictable...

We cannot go, not even with our imagination, beyond what we are capable of perceiving and conceiving mentally… and this already places a limit on what we can desire or want for ourselves. Furthermore, we may grow weary of maintaining our focus on a specific goal for long periods, especially when our requests are highly detailed—or rather, conditioned by our supposed needs or desires.

Sometimes, desire itself is a limitation, especially when it is unknowingly shaped by a presumed or illusory freedom—one based on the belief that being free means doing whatever we want, crafting the scenery for our actions, and displaying our power to command obedience... as if, behind all of this, there were a deep lack of trust in life and an anxious need to determine in advance what must happen—perhaps out of fear that something beyond our control, something that might hurt us, could occur.

And once again, the body is our Master — it teaches us. In our body, within our muscular system, we find fibers that operate under the control of our conscious will. They are obedient, yes, but they tire quickly. When we subject them to continuous effort, tensions and restrictions arise, affecting the entire system and freezing us into a rigid, artificial form. Willing is exhausting when we do not surrender.

Fortunately, our body also contains muscle fibers that do not require our conscious will to function. These do not tire; they are designed precisely to support our weight, providing stability and ease in every movement. They act autonomously, based on what we are able to perceive. Within our ability to consciously perceive — to perceive by sensing and feeling — lies the key to supporting ourselves.

And how do we perceive? Through our senses — the gateways of perception that allow us to move effortlessly, feeling supported in every gesture and action. Our foot, that senses and touches the earth… Our gaze, which caresses spaces and objects, casting its own light while embracing forms and colors… Our hearing, which captures every sound and makes us vibrate with it… Our sense of smell and taste, leading us toward what we can joyfully savor…

In all this perception, we navigate the space around us, finding support within ourselves. And the more we surrender our weight to the earth with our senses fully open, the more we discover our ability to sustain ourselves… The more we expand our capacity to feel, the clearer our direction becomes.

Once again, our body holds the secrets that allow us to understand ourselves on other levels. It is the living, tangible metaphor — or even the very landscape — that provides the map to our awareness of existence itself. Willpower must be upheld by trust, and trust implies surrender. Surrender to a higher order of control...

But what is greater, or higher, than will?

That profound sense of feeling, that fully expanded perception from which the certainty of the guiding flow emerges—the flow to which we surrender, like to a gentle yet powerful current that will take us exactly where we are meant to be… where the best awaits us… where we would not even imagine arriving, so distant it seems…

There, our will yields to what some call the 'Divine Will' — almost a 'higher control' that does not require any effort to control but simply asks us to let things be, to allow them to unfold, to witness and observe what happens as we surrender…

Dance is such a powerful metaphor of Life...

When I rediscover the power of this surrender to an order greater than my small rational will, and I honor it even if I do not fully understand it, then life becomes as effortless as dancing… Then... there are no more obstacles.

There is only the free flowing of the continuous miracle and wonder.
